URLVanish: link management platform case study

Overview

URLVanish is a full-featured URL shortening and link management platform built and maintained by LovelyPixel. It provides users with branded short links, detailed click analytics, geographic and device breakdowns, and a browser extension for creating short links on the fly.

The platform was built to handle high-traffic volumes reliably while providing meaningful analytics that go beyond simple click counts.

Challenge

Most URL shortening services provide limited analytics, charge premium prices for useful features, or lack the flexibility businesses need for branded links. The goal was to build a platform that:

Scale and traffic handled

30,832,020+ clicks tracked to date across the platform. The redirect path is engineered to resolve in single-digit milliseconds at P95, with horizontal scaling in front of a Redis-cached routing layer and a MySQL/Postgres-backed long-term store.

Analytics depth

Per-link dashboards with geography, device, OS, browser, referrer and time-based breakdowns. Exportable and available via API.

Extension component

A browser extension for Chromium-based browsers so users can shorten, brand and share from any page in a single click, with instant analytics sync.
